Trsteno Arboretum located in same name village and is the oldest arboretum in this part of the world. The arboretum was built by the local noble familiy Gozze in the late 15th century, who requested ship captains to bring back seeds and plants from their travels. The exact start date for the arboretum is unknown, but it was already in existance by 1492.
Ston which is larger and more historically important than Mali Ston is situated on the southern side of Pelješac. Peninsula. The town is surrounded by 5,5km long city walls which are the second longest structure of defensive walls in all of Europe, surprassed only by Hadrian’s Wall.
Mali Ston is situated on the Northern side of the Peninsula and due to it’s natural and unique lake-like bay is world famous for its mussel and oyster growing farms since Roman times. This lovely and picturesque small village is unspoiled and very relaxing surrounding.
The first mention of island Korčula dates back to the 12th century BC, while date of its founding still remains unknown. Throughout its turbulent past Korčula changed many different rulers – Croato-Hungarian kings, the Austrians, the French, the Russians, the English, while Venice, whose well known lions are seen all over town, left the deepest mark.
